Economic development in Des Moines will thrive when the city begins with the end in mind—by clearly defining what kind of community we want to become and aligning every initiative to that vision. Growth isn’t just about new buildings or infrastructure; it’s about creating places where people want to live, work, and connect. When our planning centers on people, collaboration, and stewardship, we lay a strong foundation for long-term prosperity.

The forthcoming Marina Steps project is a powerful example of how this vision can come to life. Although construction has yet to begin, community members have already formed the Friends of the Des Moines Marina Steps to build excitement, volunteerism, and shared ownership before the space even opens. By organizing early, we’re ensuring that when the Marina Steps open in Summer 2026, they will launch not as an isolated project, but as a vibrant gathering place—owned, loved, and sustained by the community.

This proactive approach—“beginning with the end in mind”—reflects the mindset Des Moines needs citywide. When residents and businesses are engaged early, they become champions of the city’s success. This collaboration fosters a sense of belonging and pride that naturally fuels economic activity. Local businesses benefit when more people visit and linger in our public spaces, and new investors are drawn to communities that radiate vitality and a shared purpose.

The Marina Steps will connect Marine View Drive to the waterfront, creating a walkable destination for events, gatherings, and commerce. Through partnerships, year-round programming, and thoughtful design, the Steps will support nearby businesses while showcasing Des Moines as a welcoming waterfront city. This is the essence of placemaking—where development doesn’t just build structures but strengthens identity, community, and commerce.

The Friends of the Des Moines Marina Steps is already laying this groundwork. We are organizing volunteers, cultivating partnerships, and developing a framework for stewardship, beautification, and events that will sustain the Steps long after their opening. By demonstrating community leadership early, we’re setting an example for how residents can actively shape the spaces that define their city.

If Des Moines integrates this same philosophy into its broader strategic plan—starting every initiative with a clear vision of the desired long-term impact—we can build a city that grows intentionally, inclusively, and sustainably. This means investing not just in projects, but in the people and partnerships that make them thrive.

Economic development rooted in collaboration, civic pride, and local leadership is what will propel Des Moines forward. The Marina Steps isn’t just a project—it’s a model for how the city can grow from the inside out: through shared vision, proactive planning, and a deep sense of community ownership. By beginning with the end in mind, Des Moines can set a course for a future defined by connection, opportunity, and enduring economic vitality.
