Who We Are
Friends of Des Moines Marina Steps is a citizen-led volunteer group dedicated solely to caring for,
enhancing, and activating the Marina Steps area. We are not a city department. Our purpose is to help make this waterfront gathering space welcoming, vibrant, and well-maintained for everyone.
Our Mission
To preserve, beautify, and celebrate the Marina Steps through community stewardship, volunteer
activities, and small-scale programming that supports safety, accessibility, and local pride.
What We Are Planning
• Host community cleanup days
• Funding planting, landscaping & beautification projects
• Support minor maintenance efforts
• Share or develop historical and educational elements
• Create small community gatherings or pop-up activities (non-commercial)
• Advocate for cleanliness, safety, and accessibility at the Steps
What We Don’t Do
To maintain clarity of purpose, we do not:
• Conduct broad community fundraising unrelated to the Marina Steps
• Act as a governing body, political group, or representative of the City
How We Collaborate
We welcome community partners when beneficial. Collaborations are:
• Voluntary
• Project-focused
• Non-competitive
• Transparent
Guiding Principles
Stewardship · Community · Independence · Collaboration · Transparency
